Course Description:
Los Angeles is home to more than 200 botánicas--retail shops that provide a variety of goods and services to address the physical and spiritual health and welfare of their communities. Research shows that botánicas are important community spaces, offering services to those who have limited access to official health care and find an effective remedy in herbal treatments.
This intensive two-day workshop will explore botánicas as dispensers of traditional medicine in Latin America. To understand the significance of botánicas within Latin American communities, the workshop will offer a variety of interdisciplinary presentations and discussions, incorporating the latest research on botánicas. Participants will learn about indigenous healing traditions and local forms of knowledge, some which have their origins in pre-colonial times and continue to play a vital role in today’s health culture and society.
Given the size of the United States population with Latin American roots, this course provides educators with the knowledge and resources in order to understand better the backgrounds and cultures of students and their families. The workshop will include curriculum sessions and discussions of how to integrate new material into the classroom.

Course Requirements:
You must be able to attend all workshop sessions. Participants will have access to reading materials, discussion questions, and other resources and assignments online via a course website.
To receive LAUSD salary credit, participants must attend all sessions and access the online course site to complete readings and assignments. Participants will submit a reflective essay and standards-based lesson plans centered on the workshop's themes as their final assignment.
