Course Description:

Street commerce represents one of the most dynamic sectors of the informal economy in Latin America. Research shows that street vending is a source of economic survival for many in the region. Despite this fact, government policies across Latin America have constrained the livelihood of street entrepreneurs. These issues are not exclusive to Latin America; the city of Los Angeles currently has a major street vending campaign aiming to legalize street vending. Furthermore, with significant population originating from Latin America the street vending culture in Los Angeles is growing and changing. The presence of street vendors in Los Angeles not only reflects direct ties with Latin American countries but also speak to larger social and economic forces across the Americas.

This 2-day workshop will allow participants to explore the history, culture and contemporary roles of street vendors both in Latin America and in Los Angeles. The interdisciplinary approach will provide educators with the knowledge and resources to better understand the backgrounds and cultures of students and their families in the greater Los Angeles area. The workshop will include curriculum sessions and discussions of how to integrate new material into the classroom.
