Herat became the center for intercultural contacts between Iran, Central Asia and China, as well as with the West in the 15th and early 16th centuries, continued to produce crafts and especially manuscripts until the late 18th century. This talk will trace the cultural importance of Herat and the efforts of the Aga Khan Foundation and the German Archaeological Institute to restore and revitalize the Old Town and the Citadel Ikhtiyaruddin , which had been closed since the late 1980s. The talk will also tell the moving story of how some 2000 objects were brought back by ordinary people of the town who had rescued them from destruction in the Taliban period.
