The UCLA Program on Central Asia presents a screening of "The Buddhas of Mes Aynak," a documentary-in-progress with filmmaker Brent Huffman, assistant professor at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. This film documents the destruction of an archaeological site in Afghanistan-a massive walled-in Buddhist city that managed to survive looters and the Taliban-by a Chinese mining company. Huffman started making a film about the Mes Aynak site in the summer of 2011 thinking he would be documenting the site before it was demolished and recording the process of rescue archeology. Now he hopes he can use his film to raise awareness to actually save Mes Aynak.
Brent E. Huffman is an award-winning director, writer, and cinematographer of documentaries and television programs. His work ranges from documentaries aired on The Discovery Channel, The National Geographic Channel, NBC, CNN, PBS and Al Jazeera, to Sundance Film Festival premieres, to films made for the China Exploration and Research Society. He has also directed, produced, shot and edited short documentaries for online outlets like TIME, Salon, Huffington Post and PBS Arts.
