The UCLA Asia Pacific Center offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for East Asian languages and area studies.

The UCLA Asia Pacific Center offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for East Asian languages and area studies. 2022-23 academic year awards will support graduate and undergraduate students with stipends and tuition and fees. Funding for these fellowships is from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI program.

Funding

  • Graduate students: stipend $20,000; tuition and fees up to $18,000 
  • Undergraduate students: stipend $5,000; tuition and fees up to 10,000

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • New or continuing students at UCLA in all disciplines are eligible. Past FLAS awardees may apply.
  • Approved languages are Chines, Japanese, and Korean. 
  • Study of other East Asian languages may be approved on a case-by-case basis. 
  • Language study must be at the intermediate or advanced levels. Graduate students who are already at the advanced level in another East Asian languages may apply to support beginning-level language study. 
  • Graduate students may apply to fund overseas dissertation research if they have completed their degree coursework and are at the advanced level of language proficiency, but this must be approved in advance and will be a low priority for consideration in the selection process. 

Obligations - FLAS fellowship recipients must:

  • enroll in full-time study for the duration of their award period. 
  • take one East Asian language and one area studies course every quarter for the entire year. 
  • plan to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies, or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries, since the purpose of the FLAS program is to enrich the nation's pool of area and international specialists. 
  • agree to the quarterly reporting requirements for the duration of the award and submit data to the U.S. Department of Education every two years for eight years after graduation on their occupation and the extent to which they use the FLAS language. 

Application Requirement

  • statement of purpose (1-2 pages) outlining research interests and the need for language study 
  • resume or curriculum vitae 
  • unofficial UCLA transcripts (new or transfer students: submit other institution transcripts for previous degrees) 
  • 2 academic/professional letters of recommendation 
  • Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate financial need. If students want their need to be considered, they can authorize Asia Pacific Center (APC) to verify their financial aid status through the UCLA Financial Aid Office.

Application should be submitted by September 6th, 2022.
